There's is clearly something wrong with the P500. If you are using the regenerated outputs (which I suspect you are) then there should be zero amounts of "ebbing and flowing" of the brightness. In fact, quite the opposite. I would suggest you let us have a look at this piece to make sure it's functioning properly - because it sure doesn't sound like it is.
