I've found that every recording has a "right" volume, at which it sounds the best to me -- a subjective judgement, of course, but in most cases it seems pretty close to what I would guess was the volume at which I would have heard the same music performed live.I've found a few exceptions. For example, the album Who's Next sounds better and better up to the loudness limits of my system, suggesting that I am not capable of reaching the "right" level. BTW, this observation only applies to the album on vinyl -- the CD I have of the same work sounds worse and worse as the volume goes up...
It's interesting that the THX spec includes calibration for overall loudness, so that (theoretically) all correctly set up home theater systems should reproduce a movie soundtrack at the same level, as the mixdown engineers intended it.
