Had a system with a bad hum. Tried reducing it by taking a clip lead (about 18 inches of wire with a clip on each end) and jumping between components; case of pre to case of amp amp, Cd player to pre, etc.
Nothing worked so I just clipped on end on the case of the pre and left the other end hanging down unattached as a place to keep it until I thought of something else to try... and the hum dropped to almost nothing. Very repeatable. Still have no idea why that would work.
