Along the lines that you are pursuing I recently watched an interesting video where Keith Johnson touched on the upper sideband problems that occur as dynamic signals approach the filter cutoff and he showed some pictures of the results. The link is below and his part is about half-way through. His take-away advice: use a higher sample rate...
