Re: John, you were sucker-punched, then piled on, by the Usual Suspects.

Steve, I hope that this clarifies things for you:
The Sound Technology 1700B has gain that normalizes the NULL output to 30mV for full scale. Normally, this full scale reading would be -80dB. The 1KHz (un-nulled component) usually comes in at about -43dbV to -45dBV depending on fine adjustment and input level. This is -95to -98dB or about .0018% in distortion which is the specified residual of the THD analyser. Interestingly enough, the actual distortion components, especially on my modified ST 1700B, are much lower and are almost completely second and third harmonic in any case.
As I said before: Just look at the 1K residual at the left of the graph and note its level. Then take that level to be about .0018% or about -95dB. Then count the harmonics that are evenly spaced apart . Ignore the second and third, because most of it is in the analyzer anyway, BUT look at the HIGHER ORDER DISTORTION in the RS cable (in this case). It is the DIFFERENCE in higher order distortion in wires that I am measuring when operating at low levels.
