There always have been and probably always will be.

For the educated or those with a bit of common sense the charlatans are primarily a source of amusement (you have an example in this thread). I can assure you they do not ruin it for me but then again because the technical side of sound is my job I am obviously unable to hold audiophile beliefs.

In defense of the charlatans, I strongly suspect the type of person that is capable of being an audiophile wants to consume what they produce and has little-to-no interest in what people with a technical knowledge in the area have to say. Personally, I can see little wrong with this since all that happens is an isolated, inwardly looking group forms and has a good time playing by its own rules. So long as membership is voluntarily I see no reason why they should play by my rules or those of science.
