"I could hear differences between brands/types of resistors, caps, and tubes" -- How did you determine this?.

As a speaker builder who used passive crossovers I know there are tolerances among crossover components that can make two samples of the same brand/model resistor sound different.

Did you measure the components before deciding they sounded different?

One part could be 5% or more over the nominal specification, and the other 5% or more under the nominal specification, even if they were the same brand/model part. That doesn't mean that two caps, of any brand, whose measurements were much more closely matched, would sound different.
