HowdyI don't think you need a non-standard setup.
Visit someone with a good MC setup (for example DVD-A or SACD) and listen to some discs which are recorded in a minimalist way. In my experience you definitely get the ambiance, the middle of the audience, the feeling of being there that no stereo system I've ever heard gives you. You don't even think about how deep the soundstage is, you are just there. You don't think about how wide it is, it's as wide as the recording venue...
If you're ever in the Seattle area come visit, the locals have some nice systems :)
