Several have pointed out recently that live sound doesn’t have near the chiseled, precise soundstage that our systems are capable of presenting. This raises the question of whether we’re crating or re-creating the hypothetical original event. My frame of reference, rightly or not, is a symphony hall. The kind of imaging we get with our sound systems is nothing like the spatial sense we get in a symphony hall. The direct sound from the stage is nearly monophonic, as is the reflected sound from the rear. The sounds that bounce off the side walls or whatever constitutes the sides of the listening space is substantially different from left to right.
That has led to the hypothesis of a quadraphonic system consisting of front, left side, right side, and rear channels.
Do you think that such a recording and playback array would more accurately re-create the original experience?
