The rate of change of the transconductance with current, or delta Gm/delta I is very different for tubes, fets and bipolar transistors. Bipolar transistors are the worst, as they have a change in Gm that is proportional to current, Fets are second worst as their transconductance changes with the square root of the current, and tubes are the best, because they follow a 3/2 law characteristic that can be partially compensated for by the change in output conductance with current.
