Obfuscation is the name of the game here....It would be great if the work on perceptual coding (understanding how we perceive sound) actually resulted in pushing the state of the art in music reproduction. It's certainly possible, but I don't know of any application beyond the lab (except for lots of work in creating synthetic soundfields as opposed to recreating real ones).
