Cubase originally was a MIDI-only sequencing program, very popular in the UK & Europe, where 'cracked' (dongle-less) copies would run on an Atari Mega-4 computer without additional hardware. -The high cost of Apple computers over there made the vastly superior 'Performer' software virtually unknown.Both are from Steinberg, but Cubase mutated into cubase audio when Digital performer was released. -Both were midi sequencers, with nonlinear audio tracks tacked on as an afterthought.
Nuendo is a ground-up audio program. It's the way to go. -No idea where you got the advice that Cubase is better for audio, I know bunches of people who work in top-drawer studio facilities who use Nuendo, and not one single person who uses Cubase for audio.
