I think the M1 is just fine for what you do. I really like the Tascam DAP1 better but its a couple of hundred dollars more. Remember when buying the sony, you need a 7 pin digital cable. Good ones cost about $100-150. Budget for it.

As for dats, I use data grade dats with vry good results. i have gone through around 5000 at this point. I think the sonys are best but dont always like to be used in sony d8 machines I havent seen a problem with them in M1 machines. NEVER use 90 meter (three hour) dats in a portable if you can avoid it. The 60 meter are much more reliable. Masterpiece digital and Terrapin tapes sells them (sony DG60 for about 3 bucks).
