There are no DAT's that are inexpensive that I know of, have you considered minidisc? If you are primarily recording ambient sounds as you discribe, that should work well for you and is much more cost efficient. On the other hand, if resoloution is critical, such as music applications, then by all means, go with the DAT. I use and recommend a Sony PCM-M1.It has all the features you will need, sounds great, and is reliable and portable.
