If you have multiple units such as reel to reels, cassette, DAT digital bla bla players
etc....
You plug all those devices into the back of a patch bay and leave
them connected

You label each device on the front of the patch bay where it is
plugged in R/L stereo and the name of the device or mono and the name of the device

Then you have 1/4 inch or RCA or XLR or whatever type of cable
you want to use and you can patch into the above devices
quickly with one set of cables

It is an easier way to connect to different devices in the studio
world
