The inputs are balanced. If you plug a 1/4" tip-sleeve connector into the input jack, it shorts one leg of the input to ground, and so it becomes unbalanced. That works well for short interconnect cable runs.

One can always insist on paying more for cables if that pleases his or her ear-go. ;^)

The PLX (discontinued, but many used and old stock are available) and PLX2 amps are probably your best bet. Their fans are relatively quiet, and they have an excellent noise floor and linearity.
