Far field response mirrors the off axis response.cd horns provide dispersion so the mid and/or highs penetrate a room.
I ran an 8" full range that way flat nearfield but had no high end in the back of the room, barely any on axis. I added a piezo (3 3/4") and the highs were thrown everywhere, they easily made it to the back of the room everywhere.
A speaker sounds better 6 or more feet away if they have a smooth, lvl off axis response.................
