A notch filter blocks the signal at a specific frequency or extremely narrow frequency range. When done properly, notch filters should be virtually inaudible in regard to the impact on signal fidelity. Notch filters are often used to block out annoying "whistles" or "heterodynes" of fixed frequency that often occur during AM or shortwave radio reception.
