DAT data drive question

Pro studio recording equipment and music production/industry.

I would like to know if DAT data backup drives can be used to pass digital audio DAT tapes to my PC for editing, CD burning etc. As a musician I use a portable Sony TCD-D8 for recording rehearsals, performances, practice, etc. I would like a cheap way of digitally transferring the audio from these work tapes onto my computer without having to purchase a digital out adapter for the D8 and a PC sound card with digital inputs.
