almost all old mixers (pre-1960, or so) used rotary faders instead of the straight line faders used on modern consoles. And everything was bigger back in the good old days.....

There were several broadcast consoles available back then from manufacturers. REcording consoles were less common and more frequently a home-brew affair, although many studios started with a broadcast console and just mod'd it for recording use.

I'm not sure exactly what you want to know, but some of the more well known brands of desks were Altec, Gates, Universal Audio, Telefunken, RCA.
