The machine should have a speed knob or switch to switch the record and play equalization as these are different for 3.75 and 7.5 IPS. However, without the capstan "sleeve" you will not be able to change the actual transport speed. Are you positive it isn't already on the capstan? Without it it plays at 3.75 IPS. You should have no tapes that would sound too fast at this speed unless the tapes were recorded on another machine at 1 7/8 IPS.There is one other possibility. The machine may be set for the wrong line frequency for your area.
