Good point, but I'm posing this as more of a hypothetical, for when you have an analog source that's either not referenced, or else you're doing a transfer from LP, etc.

If you do a little previewing of the material and are skillful enough to leave *less* than 6dB of "room" between the highest peak level of your material and the 0dB [digital maximum] level, would it be correct to say that you're probably losing no more than 1 bit? (Which at 24 bits is not a huge deal) ?
