Re: field recording--portable dats and stuff

I second the mini disc recorder. I have a Sharp 722 recorder and it does an excellent job at recording concerts. In mono I can get 148 minutes on one disk and newer units will double that. The sound quality is excellent compared to cassette. DAT is good, but several times as expensive, plus mini discs are much easier to edit. You can cut and move recordings around without a second machine.

Blank Mini Discs are cheap too, I buy mine at www.cassettehouse.com, never pay more than $1.50 USA each for them.

Here is a good resource on minidisk recorders.
