Hi Steve,I've worked in a number of rooms through the years and I agree with you 100%: the room with the band is the one that gets recorded.
Of all the studios I've been in, its the old ones with the really large rooms that have produced the best sounding recordings. Is it just the rooms? I don't think so. I believe they also had the good fortune of having good engineers and producers; people with good insight and the gumption to follow their guts instead of merely following the herd.
I know of no reason why you should not follow through with your plan. Most of the "modern" studios I've visited and worked in (okay, almost all of them) have been designed "by the numbers" and invariably are musical failures. Many rooms become the studio "du jour" for a while but this is a function of fashion and not of sound and music.
Go with your gut. You're on the right track.
