I think you've answered your question. You say that " the amp was at the max and also the mic vol on the mixer was at the
max." Depending on little else, an overdriven preamp ANYWHERE in the signal chain will cause clipping which could definately sound like a "pop"(s)
As far as the "wall wart" suggestion, while basically true, they do not usually provide for this type of distortion, rather they will put a "hum" into the path usually due to the poor quality of transformer the majority of the maufacturers use.
