I think there's a little of both maybe :-)

My application is the following: I have 8 digital stereo sources with only S/PDIF TOSlink 44.1kHz optical output (1 fiber for each source). I need to merge and mix (fade-in/out) these in real-time (that's where MIDI control would be nice) and output digitally the mixed signal (stereo). AES/EBU output would be ideal but anything else (S/PDIF optical or coax) would do because I could always convert to AES/EBU using a Midiman CO3 converter.
