Rent something first, like a pair of 15" powered cabinets, and a powered sub. Try them with and without the sub. On the other hand, a powered mixer and passive speakers might be a better choice, if the instructor will be using a mic as well as a music source. It'll also be simpler to just run speaker cables to each cabinet.
