I've got one of the C1000s and.....

have discovered how well it does with vocals and horns.

It seems our OP is having problems with his AKG - not the same one as referenced here. My first reaction to reading his post was that he's experiencing a couple of problems:

1) Impedance mismatch. I doubt the mic pres on his audio interface allow for adjusting it, though.

2) A problem with the cable. I discovered this the hard way by buying cheaper mic cables only to discover that the solder connections were poor, the strain relief didn't provide relief, and some of them were wired incorrectly. This caused all sorts of problems with phamtom power, of course, and poor sonics. It took a while to sort out which ones were bad and to fix by rebuild each and every one of them.
