RE: Pro sound at home...

Buy an older Altec model. Chances are they will smoke anything else today, and Altec actually made some fairly nice looking home trimmed models: The model 14 and 19 come to mind. You can also purchase the individual drivers off EBay or other used sources, and have them rebuilt if you are really concerned about their condition, New drivers are available from Great plains Audio which has taken over the the old Altec factory.

Even modern pro gear differ radically from older 'pro' designs. In the old days, pro gear meant something that was built to higher standards, capable of more abuse, and with the ability to be repaired than to be tossed if anything went wrong. The older Altecs and JBL's went out of favor because they were rather big heavy and large.

Size was due to the use of a bass horn which really boosted low frequency sensitivity. Trouble is, that calls for a larger cabinet. As a result many A-7's, the smallest of the Altecs, tend to be a bit abused cabinet wise. But since you seem to have woodworking skills, a rebuild or a new build is not that difficult.

Of course there are other pro drivers, TAD comes to mind, but the Altecs seem to be rather plentiful at the moment and priced a bit more reasonably.
