How long are the ports now? By your comments I assume they are fairly lengthy, but for all the speakers I build (someone else's design) I use 3" wide by 4" long port tubes. This seems to cover the whole vocal range plus some even out in the middle of a room. Another consideration is that if they were sold as monitors, they were probably designed with the assumption they would be on the floor all the time.
