Integrated Amp w/ DAC or DAC separate?

I'm looking for the most cost-effective, best sounding solution for setting up my first audio system (pc as server). Would it be better to run a digital signal from my PC, to an external DAC, to an amp/integrated amp...or run the signal from my PC, to an integrated amp which already has a DAC built in?

On a related note, could I "get by" by skipping the DAC altogether, and just running a signal directly from my stock PC sound card, to an amp, which drives my high-end speakers?
