who finds that the Squeezebox Touch is capable of higher performance when fed by a nice linear power supply. I researched the field of options from surplus and modified laptop supplies, building my own unit to a range of standalone choices and went with ordering a Welborne Labs PSX. I was aware that there had been some customer service issues with Ron in the past, but I really liked the design. If the unit hadn't shipped in a month's time (website says 72 hours if no backordered parts), I would simply explain the non-delivery to AMEX.
Such was completely unnecessary. I had good communications with WL and the unit arrived about two weeks after placing the order. I chose the red aluminum case and that took a bit longer to get.
There are many things to like about the design of the PSX:
1. It is purpose built to work specifically with the Touch
2. It uses high quality parts on a custom circuit board
3. It contains a half-joule of energy!
4. The board is contained in a nicely finished anodized aluminum case
5. The mini-pin plug is detachable and comes in custom lengths
As for the sound, it definitely does what others have reported.
1. Bass response has more impact
2. Occasional "ticking" at the top end is gone
3. A level of artificial brightness and noise is replaced by better inner detail and low level resolution
I just have to smile when I read what non-experiential theorists say over at the Logitech forum about the notion of using a high quality linear:
"...so replacing the OEM switcher accomplishes nothing"
Summary? Two thumbs up. Great performance and good if not stellar service. :)
