Of course, eye pattern and symmetry of waveform are imporant. The dac trigger points are dependent on the rising edge and falling edge. If there is ringing and discontinuities due to refelections and or ground bounce and mark space ratio differences, then you'd expect anaomalies.
Jitter alone is just an excuse. Most PC spdif outputs are not good.
