The recording and mastering studio use higher bit and sampling rates. IMO any discerning audiophile would want to use these higher rates and possibly avoid any downsampling or conversion process to suit some old optical disc standard. On the other hand the larger consumer mass market could probably care less and they just want something inexpensive and musically satisfying.
The solution - lossy downloads and RBCDs for the masses; high rez downloads, high rez audio data discs and high rez optical discs for the audiophiles.
