I dont't know if all this is true, I use almost 2 years a Apogee Mini DAC (into an Ayre K1x BTW), and the fact is that I have never bothered about making the comparison between USB and fw, since I know the limitations of sound reproduction are not the firewire Apogee I use, but the source (recording technique, digital domain mixing, processing & compressing on the source material - the avarage output on pop is -1dB=broadband noise)
I have come to understand this after purchasing some of Linn's outstanding classical recordings on 24/96. AFter listening to those I understood that tweaking systems is futile compared to gains possible by using better source material. The avarage output on Linn 24/96 classical recording is -20dB, with high peaks and low lows, easy to follow on Maestro.
I like a lot the integration/implemetation of firewire into OSX, I run the HDD on the same fw interface, not a single click or hick after 2 years of intensive use. I have spent O minutes on upgrading, looking for drivers, settings or whatsoever.
I know there is a strong lobby in favor of USB here, when I see that all the *M* member are into USB, propably becaue Wintel is into USB... It is hard to imagine that FW *would* be better or so..
