External professional cards very often use firewire. So I assumed that this was due to superiority of firewire to the USB audio protocol. Is this incorrect? For USB audio, I understand that the audio data can be transfered using synchronous, adaptive, asynchronous or block mode. Of these it seems that the async & maybe block are the best but are rare. Exceptions are Wavelength (async), Creative Audigy 2 NX (async) and the EMU 0404 USB (block).
What are the modes used to transmit audio via Firewire? Are they similar to USB? Which is the best mode(s) for Firewire? Can the mode used be determined before purchasing?
