6db attentuation is causing loss of effectively one bit resolution, 12db-2bit ....
We're talking db all the time, thus talking logarithmic terms.
Don't forget that the mastering resp. recording engineers manipulate
gainwise usually every single track on the recording to get the levels
on all inputs alligned.
Nobody is questioning the loss of resolution when doing digital VC, but running the VC in the analog domain is causing more trouble than doing it properly in the digital domain - that's at least the way I see it.
