You could always learn assembly computer language and make it custom for yourself. In terms of dreaming, well USB is nothing more than standard serial ports on steroids. I am sure you could DIY something with enough knowledge of software and hardware. It might be a life long process however.

What's wrong with building what you want from scratch? Embedded Processors are cheap nowadays. I am sure there are some cpu scientists out there who would love to tackle such a task. Obviously outsourcing would be a way to go if enough capital was present.

I just stick to the Squeezebox and a NAS drive running Slimserver on linux. Why not put the .wav files on a network drive?
