If you're using Windows Vista, check to see if the software of the sound card you're contemplating buying works with Vista. I have a Creative Audigy external sound card. I had to download from Creative a new software pack (including driver). It's "beta" only and it does not feature the full set of features I enjoyed before I moved from XP to Vista. Again, this issue only applies if you're using Vista.
