I'd second the suggestion that you check the replay gain settings. I've experienced this sort of behavior with the replay gain adjustment enabled. In the SlimServer web interface check the player settings under Home / Player Settings for (your Squeezebox) / Audio / Volume Adjustment/Replay Gain and make sure it's set to Disable Volume Adjustment.
Outside of that try the rest of John's suggestions. If all else fails you can call SlimDevices directly and I'm sure they'll be able to help.
