Crackle when using fixed volume on SB3..

I am using wireless SB3 with DAC1 as a digital player. I am very happy with the quality compared to the Airport Express.
One recurring problem I have with the SB3 is I hear crackle on loud music passages when I set the Slimserver volume to be fixed or at a maximum volume. The problem goes away when I lower the Slimserver volume and increase the volume of my preamp. The lossless digital music files are fine, and all other equipments ie. DAC, pre, amp etc are fine. I worry because I feel the quality of the music will somewhat decrease with the lowering of the SB3 volume.
What is causing this problem?
