When ripping with Apple Lossless one does not have the option of selecting mono or stereo. Unlike AAC of AIFF, automatic is the only option. I've noticed that I never get a mono rip with Lossless so I guess the auto function is not very smart. For that reason I tend to use the other formats when the original is mono. But this brings up a larger question; Is there any reason why ripping a mono original in stereo would be preferable to mono? I think I hear a bit less hiss with mono/mono and it of course takes up half as much space.
