Audio capture device recommendations

Hello,

I escaped from the tube DIY asylum just to end up here... DUH!

I've been enjoying my M-Audio audiophile 2496 sound card for the last 20 years but the last PC I own that had a legacy PCI interface just died. I'm currently looking around if a PCI to PCI-express could allow me to extend the M-Audio's lifetime but it seems lika a half-baked solution at best and will probably require building some form of external enclosure.

In the meantime, also looking for recommendations on good quality audio capture devices, 24/96 capable and preferably having good quality RCA jacks - Basically having the M-audio capabilities but with a modern computer interface.

I'm mostly doing vinyl capture, and have a fairly good quality analogue kit, including electrostatic headphones that will reveal any defects :) I'm using linux so has to have compatibility with that.

I just did a quick test on the line in jack of the integrated soundcard on my main computer. It sounded like cr-p and was full of hum and noise - not an option. M-Audio must have done a really good pcb layout job to produce a noise-free internal sound card.

I know about Behringer products that seem to enjoy a good reputation but I've had a bad experience with a phono preamp of theirs... But perhaps it was just the RIAA section that was bad.

How are you people doing your vinyl transfers?

TIA!
