An IPO is typically a strategy to exchange some portion of ownership of a business for access to capital. If the IPO is well executed and there is sufficient market demand for the stock, it can be a great opportunity for investors, and allow the company to invest in the business.
If it doesn't go well, then it can damage the company's finances and tarnish its reputation.
