requires a bit of DIY spirit to assemble and configure to get the best results. To some, that immediately rules it out. To others, it provides a rewarding challenge. I use piCorePlayer software which allows me to declock the processor and disable unnecessary stuff. While not my best sounding endpoint, I still have two since they are so inexpensive. One serves as ready backup.
Is it important to power it with a LPS?
Or battery if you want the best top end resolution. I find that a good power supply eliminates a false brightness that obscures musical detail when using an inexpensive SMPS. Even a fifty buck linear provides enough of an improvement for me. And following a recommendation from the designer of my ultraRendu, I tried using a starquad DC cord. Not expensive but also serves to improve low level dynamics.
Is it a compromise to stream the music to it via WiFi?
I find it works fine so long as you give it enough throughput. The active RPi is located in a semi-attached garage which ruled out a practical ethernet solution. I placed an access point out there to feed both it and a security camera located nearby. The original AP wasn't particularly strong and in order to consistently stream 192/24 content, I needed an aftermarket antenna. After retiring, I was able to move a more powerful AP there (150 Mbit up/down) which eliminated the need for the antenna. Back to using onboard unit.
