I've been running a RPi 4B as music server for a couple of years, using the Raspbian OS and LMS. I also use the unit as my Plex server for streaming my video collection and some other light computing chores.
For no particular reason other than curiosity I was on a wait list for an RPi 5 from one authorized supplier when I found them in stock and available from PiShop, I canceled the waitlist order and received my new purchase last week.
Raspberry Pi has updated their OS from Raspbian to Raspberry Pi OS, but its just the most recent version with a name change, still based on Debian Linux. Installation and setup was fairly easy with the only issue being I couldn't get the current stable version of LMS (8.3.1) to run. However, I found using the beta 8.4.0 version solved that problem. Plex installed without issue.
The summary? If you are only using a RPi as a LMS server, the 4B version is more than enough. This model also does fine as a Plex server. However, if you want to use a RPi for other operations the RPi 5 is much faster in terms of opening programs, web pages and processing power. Another good note is that it doesn't run any warmer than the RPi 4. It's a great buy at list price ($80 for the 8 GB model, $60 for the 4 GB.) However, buy from an authorized Pi dealer -- Amazon and EBay have these marked up quite a bit. Also pay attention to the power supply used -- the RPi 4 model isn't strong enough.
