I opened a support case with Apple and ultimately wound up talking to a tech who grabbed a SuperDrive and connected it to two machines running Sonoma. In both cases, no popup appeared when he navigated to where it is supposed to be.
He basically said he thinks the documentation team just cloned the documentation from earlier documentation. I took that to mean not Autoplay for you or anyone else running Sonoma.
I installed VLC. I checked off the closest thing I could find to Autoplay. It was Settings> Show All> Playlist > Play and stop but that did not work.
The Mac automatically launches VLC when I insert the CD but then I have to drag the CD into VLC. Music does this automatically so I will be sticking with it for now.
