Drives connect with those (apparently) charging-only cables aren't recognized by my computer whereas they are when connected with cables specified for data transfer.

Check out Amazon for example: there you will see cable specified for, say, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and other cables, generally cheaper, that make no data transfer claims.
