Abe, thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. I spent much of the day listening to the setup downstairs and concluded that USB from the Mini direct to the QB-9 DSD is the way to go, and likely to get even better with the Twenty upgrade. I've been surprised how well the Ayre K-5xeMP pairs with the JC 1s, better than the JC 2 in my setup. Augmenting the KEF LS50s with a pair of KC62 subs is a real win.
