The picture shows a chip (U1) in the data lines and another (U3) in the +5v line. That suggests an isolator chip of some sort and an LDO Vreg: the device does seem to be a 'proper regenerator' rather than a filter circuit like the now rather dated AudioQuest thingie.
As you suggest, PS quality is definitely critical in these situations but the cost of, say, a LPS-1.2 and a Regen is roughly three times that of the CorePower device on its own. OTOH, a little (reversible) jiggery-pokery would enable the likes of an affordable LiFePO4 PS with the latter.
Sadly, the author of the cited review (and several others I found) seem unfamiliar with the topic and to have little to say beyond "Gosh. It's soooooo clear". Which isn't very helpful.
